We linked up with Halo Fishing Rods for a fishing rod challenge on Lake Guntersville. Walt is an absolute stick out on the lake so we learned about summer bass behavior as well as the technology that makes up some of the fishing rods I love. What was most interesting to me is how the Ti series fishing rods – the ones I use for fishing a Mag Ned Rig or other soft plastic worm lures – have a solid tip vs. a tubular tip, creating a soft fast taper for casting and loading up during a hookset.

You told me it would happen and today it did. Bog the rescue pitbull fell in the lake and almost drowned. We were fishing and the dog tried to transfer boats and fell in the water. He went under 2 times and I could not grab his collar so I dove in after him. There is a lot of current in the river so I was scared he would get caught in it and he was freaking out – scary moment to say the least. I am just glad he is alright and we will be looking for a dog life jacket as well as being super careful when we bring Bog the dog to the lake to go fishing!

If there is one fishing technique I love it’s flipping and punching heavy cover for bass. And right now on Lake Guntersville the mats are stacked with bass to target with heavy Hawg Tech tungsten weights, a heavy action fishing rod, and big braid. You can do it too by targeting matted vegetation on your home lake or body of water, all you need to do is find vegetation that makes a canopy for bass to live under. The rain took a break and we went finesse micro swimbait fishing on Lake Lanier with Tim from Hammond’s Fishing Center! Tim taught me about “blow thrus” and other lingo anglers use to describe various cover and structure on the lake. The water is rather clear and the main forage is blueback herring. Tim explained that the herring will eat the eggs of the bass and using that micro swimbait like a Little EZ on a ball head and slow rolling it on the bottom mimics the bluebacks. This finesse rig is pretty cool and I think it would be perfect for targeting bass on Smith Lake as well as rocky areas during summer and winter.

I got the most insane sight fishing bite fishing for bass in a tiny clear creek on Lake Lanier. It was unbelievable!!! Reeling in a Nichols Ned Rig Jig with a Gambler Ace I had two bass follow the bait all the way to the boat. I flipped the bait back out while looking at the fish and it bit!!! Absolutely insane!!! Probably the best sight fishing bites I have ever had. We caught some other spotted bass on a range of techniques from throwing Sebile swimbaits to casting micro swimbaits on ball jig heads. Lake Lanier is super clear and the creeks were no exceptions so using light line and more finesse fishing techniques was key.

My buddy Cobi let me check out his super expensive Roman Made Swimbait!!! Insane fishing lure! Ever since I won this bass boat I have been trying to make mods and upgrades to tweak this rig into the perfect fishing machine. One thing I’ve been dreaming of is having double graphs at the dash so we went with the leader Bass Boat Technologies Dual Graph Mount and Stacker Mount. I noticed however there is not an install video on YouTube that’s a true tutorial on how to install the Bass Boat Technologies mount. So in this walk thru my not so mechanically inclined self goes through the tools, steps and process I used for the install of both the bow and dash mount.

JT Kenney spent some time with me on Lake Guntersville and broke down why his Nichols Mag Ned Rig works. As you know love throwing a Ned Rig finesse fishing for bass – largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass. It’s a technique that works fishing anywhere in the country. At this rate I’ll never be a pro LOL!!!! We hit a new lake for a 1v1 head to head fishing challenge with my friend Charlie to see who could catch the biggest bass on a clear water lake we have NEVER been to! We used our Lowrance sonar and C Map to find structure and locate fish and then experimented with a variety of fishing lures. There is no doubt the highlight was a swimbait. Both Charlie and I ended up turning to a hollow body swimbait – styles and sizes below – rigged up with 3/4oz swimbait jig head with stout hook. The 1v1 competition added some fun and some hilarious smack talk to the whole fishing trip. Watch the whole vid to see who wins this challenge and what lures worked on this ultra clear lake!
