In this video I totally bust my boat right after catching a huge bass flipping heavy cover. I also drop some fishing tips, techniques, and rod and reel setup for flipping and pitching grass for spring bass.
In this fishing tips and techniques video I go though what the pros don’t tell you about flipping and punching for heavy cover bass in summer and fall. One of my favorite techniques to catch bass, I teach you what soft plastic lures to use, how to rig them for flipping, and what to look for when pond fishing or lake fishing to go punching for bass. It is one of my favorite fishing techniques and works great anywhere you have super heavy cover that mats up. It is also an epic way to catch bass – heavy fishing rods, heavy braided fishing line, and a heavy tungsten weight.

In this video I show you my favorite place to fish for and catch PB bass – you really don’t need to fish anywhere else in Florida if you are trying to catch a trophy bass, it’s cheating!!! The Sebring and Highlands County lakes offer any angler the chance to use a ton of fishing techniques – from frog fishing, flipping and punching, to fishing ledges and offshore structure with crankbaits, spoons and jigs! In this video I teach you one of my favorite ways to catch bass in late summer and fall by using my HDS LIVE sonar to locate brushpiles and fish them with jigs, spoons, and hair jigs!
There is no doubt in my mind the Shimano Curado 200e is and was the best fishing reel ever made. These days I pair it with my heavy cover fishing rods for frog fishing, punching, flipping and anything that involves braided fishing line. These are basically antique fishing reels but they’ve held up to catching fish so awesomely well that I just can’t see myself replacing them. They do need a little TLC from time to time when I’m not on the water and I think a mouse got to my reel handle on my punching rod setup so I needed to replace it. I opted for a Hawg Tech handle over a standard Shimano replacement because my buddy makes them, they look pretty epic (matching my fishing rod), and they last longer than the one’s Shimano sells after market. We do a quick reel handle repair in this video and you can see how simple it is to swap out any standard reel handle with a new one as well as take a look at a giant fish catch using my technique specific cranking handle.

When you take big risks you get big rewards!! This is the most dangerous bass fishing on the planet, putting a big tungsten weight with a heavy action fishing rod under a mat can be totally + WORTH IT!!! Jacob Wall (FLW PRO) and I go to Lake Guntersville and flip mats and cast chattterbaits for big bass. Fishing heavy cover is worth it when it produces big fish and it did today we walk thru tip and techniques for targeting bass in late summer and fall – where, why, and how to find insane fishing in heavy vegetation and cover.
I got the most insane sight fishing bite fishing for bass in a tiny clear creek on Lake Lanier. It was unbelievable!!! Reeling in a Nichols Ned Rig Jig with a Gambler Ace I had two bass follow the bait all the way to the boat. I flipped the bait back out while looking at the fish and it bit!!! Absolutely insane!!! Probably the best sight fishing bites I have ever had. We caught some other spotted bass on a range of techniques from throwing Sebile swimbaits to casting micro swimbaits on ball jig heads. Lake Lanier is super clear and the creeks were no exceptions so using light line and more finesse fishing techniques was key.

When you’re fishing for bass flipping mats and punching heavy cover the results are usually epic! Not many bites during this fishing trip on Lake Kissimmee but we caught a trophy fish in heavy cover using one of my favorite fishing techniques. Punching mats is a great way to fish for bass this time of year throughout Florida with fish moving in to spawn throughout the winter and getting stuck due to cold fronts or even using heavy cover such as hydrilla and hyacinth as stopping points before heading to the bed. My standard setup is a 1.5oz tungsten weight, a straight shank hook, and a compact creature bait. Terminal tackle is 65lbs braided line, a high speed decent quality reel, and fishing rod usually longer than 7’6″. Below are all the specifics on the fishing gear and cameras used in the video.
Punching Lake Okeechobee for bass is always epic and one of the most techniques when fishing for trophy largemouth bass. With Florida spring coming it’s time to brush up on our punching skills and lay out some of the inside details from fishing rods and reels, baits, terminal tackle, and fishing tips for where – when – and how to target bass in heavy vegetation.
On Lake Okeechobee the best time of year to use this fishing technique is from October to April – basically what most people call winter is an elongated spring pre-spawn period for fish. This means waves of bass staging and spawning throughout these months and punching is a great way to target them. in the vid we highlight how to fish for bass in emergent vegetation like cattails, bully whips, and lily pads, as well as mats like hydrilla, penny wort, and hyacinth. If you want to learn how to punch for bass it’s all right here.
