One of my favorite techniques to catch bass, I teach you what soft plastic lures to use, how to rig them for flipping, and what to look for when pond fishing or lake fishing to go punching for bass. It is one of my favorite fishing techniques and works great anywhere you have super heavy cover that mats up. Last year around this time we went flipping and punching on Lake Rousseau with Glenn Browne to shoot an OG challenge fishing video. Of course the master of flipping beat me and Chris from 44 Tackle! So on my way back home I stopped at the bait shop and headed out to Lake Rousseau to pay homage to the master of punching who is sadly no longer with us with a good buddy and mentor of mine Sean Blucher. Sean is a big fish master himself and loves to flip and punch heavy cover as much as I do for bass! Sadly what we found is the FWC had done some environmental herbicide treatments and destroyed the bass ecosystem just as it was beginning to thrive.

The late summer and fall flipping punching bite is here and I need a new punching rod for fishing heavy cover for bass. So I asked my buddy Walt who is an expert fishing rod builder at Halo what he would recommend and what my bud JT Kenney uses for catching big fish in heavy cover. If there is one fishing technique I love it’s flipping and punching heavy cover for bass. And right now on Lake Guntersville the mats are stacked with bass to target with heavy Hawg Tech tungsten weights, a heavy action fishing rod, and big braid. You can do it too by targeting matted vegetation on your home lake or body of water, all you need to do is find vegetation that makes a canopy for bass to live under. This was one of the most unbelievable days fishing I’ve ever had. WE seriously saved her life by catching her choking on a giant carp on Lake Kissimmee! I was out with FLW Pro Tyler Woolcott and he snagged a fish with a trap fishing lure and it turned out she was choking on a fish she tried to eat. We saved her life by pulling the carp out of her mouth…serioulsy! I’ve only seen this twice before in all my fishing and each time the fish was choking on bream. I’ve never seen a fish eat something so big and seriously be on it’s way to other world. It’s suck a cool thing too, this fish was giant – all of 8-9lbs and without us catching her the way we did she would have never survived. I have spent a lot of time on the lake but I still run into some crazy things out on the water and this one was epic. Any time you can see a fish that big and play a role in saving her life is a good day on the lake, I can’t wait to see what our next adventure will bring

This is one of the most intense ways to cheat bass in to biting during high pressure situations and it’s flat out the funnest fishing technique I have ever learned. When you have semi clear water and heavy vegetation or cover using a heavy tungsten weight, a fairly heavy action fishing rod, and an attitude to grind whatever lake you might be on! There’s nothing more raw that targeting these type of fish when the situation is right. Heavy cover provides bass a hangout where they can live in low light water conditions and ambush whatever they want to eat as it passes by. Vegetation like hyacinth, penny wort, and water lettuce are some of the key types of vegetation we looks for as well a underwater hydrilla or milfoil. All provide those canopy characteristics that are perfectly suited for using this fishing technique. Braided fishing line, heavy guage hooks, and a solid snell knot. The fish bite is usually a slight tap or dead weight and sometimes you might be tricked thinking you are hung up on vegetation especially during fall and winter seasons when activity levels can be lower. Isolated targets are the best for bigger fish but that can be a challenge – it can mean targeting less fish more spread out.

Fishing for bass is a contact sport on Lake Okeechobee and sometimes you end up bleeding from injuries – especially when you punching for bass! Well that’s what happened to poor Bass Quest when grabbing a 7+lbs Lake Okeechobee bass that I had punched out of heavy cover and he ended up bleeding all over the place! In summer you can’t beat targeting heavy cover using the pitching technique to present fishing lures to fish setup in water around heavy cover. When it comes to fishing techniques it’s one of my favorite and it’s such an intensely INSANE way to catch fish on any lake.

This is the best way to get great audio from your action camera and the best shot when fishing in POV or first person perspective situations like fishing. This rig is comfortable, adaptable, portable and light weight allowing you to shoot for extended periods of time without changing batteries.
