The late summer and fall flipping punching bite is here and I need a new punching rod for fishing heavy cover for bass. So I asked my buddy Walt who is an expert fishing rod builder at Halo what he would recommend and what my bud JT Kenney uses for catching big fish in heavy cover. We are also doing a road trip to Wisconsin to fish for smallmouth and largemouth bass so I needed some other technique specific fishing rods to throw tubes and finesse fishing lures for finicky ultra clear water bass up north.

There is nothing for fun for an angler than exploring a fishing tackle store! We walk thru GTO – Guntersville Tackle and Outdoors just down the street from Lake Guntersville. Paul the owner is stocked up with Gambler stuff for the upcoming free tournament September 28th and there’s also a bunch of cool local fishing lures! One of the most interesting things I found was a topwater chopper lure I’ve never seen before from Jackall and a Megabass Big M 4.0 Crankbaits, a monster squarebill crankbait which I can’t wait to try out grass fishing!

We linked up with Halo Fishing Rods for a fishing rod challenge on Lake Guntersville. Walt is an absolute stick out on the lake so we learned about summer bass behavior as well as the technology that makes up some of the fishing rods I love. What was most interesting to me is how the Ti series fishing rods – the ones I use for fishing a Mag Ned Rig or other soft plastic worm lures – have a solid tip vs. a tubular tip, creating a soft fast taper for casting and loading up during a hookset.

If there is one fishing technique I love it’s flipping and punching heavy cover for bass. And right now on Lake Guntersville the mats are stacked with bass to target with heavy Hawg Tech tungsten weights, a heavy action fishing rod, and big braid. You can do it too by targeting matted vegetation on your home lake or body of water, all you need to do is find vegetation that makes a canopy for bass to live under. My buddy Cobi let me check out his super expensive Roman Made Swimbait!!! Insane fishing lure! We went to Lake Guntersville to bass fish and Cobi caught some insane glide bait bass fishing super shallow water. It started as a Ned Rig only fishing trip but as the bass moved up and became more active Cobi’s commitment to the Glide Bait paid off!! JT Kenney spent some time with me on Lake Guntersville and broke down why his Nichols Mag Ned Rig works. As you know love throwing a Ned Rig finesse fishing for bass – largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass. It’s a technique that works fishing anywhere in the country. I always thought I hated shady anglers and bass fishermen that threw shade all over the place. Come to find out in fact I’m shady and I love to throw shade when I’m using my C-Map on lakes. So I just started fishing these lakes and I’m looking for any way to be more efficient and practical with my search for fish. In this video we use a custom shading tool on my C-Map lake maps to do some depth shading in order to identify the most productive water for fishing on different kinds of lakes. this process also helps when navigating your bass boat on a new lake as well as highlighting differences in depths and changes through contrasting colors and custom palettes that work best for you.
