There is only one lure you need to catch bass in spring and honestly the way it triggers fish it’s like cheating!!! The Ned Rig is one of the best fishing lures for a couple reasons – it catches small fish and giant bass but also any angler can fish it from a beginner to an expert angler. It’s a finesse style technique that catches all species of bass and especially in late spring fishing a Ned Rig is just like cheating because the fish can’t resist it! I rig my ned rig jig with a small soft plastic worm stickbait that I cut down – a Gambler Ace and it’s tough to beat a color like green pumpkin. Since the water was not super clear and we were fishing for smallmouth and largemouth bass I used some chartreuse dip on the tail as well.

A Ned Rig jig and a soft plastic is a perfect technique to catch spring bass moving up to spawn. The versatility of the lure really makes it shine and it’s finesse features allow it to catch fish in nearly any conditions – clear water, deep water fishing, skipping docks…it’s one of the most adapatable spring fishing techniques that works for any angler. There’s a little trick I figured out that I don’t even think the pros are doing on Lake Guntersville where you flip a ned rig on light action fishing rod like a spinning rod to holes in the grass – you need clear water but basically you’re triggering spawning and staging bass using those sandy areas as pathways. It catches fish and any angler can do it – it’s easy!

As you know I put a Lowrance Ghost trolling motor on my bass boat a few weeks ago and one thing that frustrates me is no pro angler will be honest in reviewing positives and negatives of a product. In this video we review the Lowrance Ghost – taking a look at the spot lock feature, sonar and graph integration, some of the creature boat comforts it offers, as well as some of the quirks that stand out. Overall, I love the trolling motor but there are a few things that need a little TLC or aftermarket tweaks to take full advantage of. It doesn’t matter where you’re fishing, googans exist everywhere. A reminder, what is a real googan – someone that doesn’t want to put the work in to find fish. So I’m out ledge fishing and I understand a lot of fishing holes are community spots but this guy pulled his boat up right next to mine and we even crossed fishing lines!!?! I don’t own the lake but I don’t think I would’ve done this to someone?

On a more fun subject we had a blast summer fishing using our electronics and noticing some bait fish to locate and dial in the bass. One thing I recommend is trying to fish during low light periods such as morning or sunset – it truly changes the way the fish behave and you will catch more fish.

Fishing for bass is never the same even if you go to the same lake. I’ve found on this new adventure that these fish can deceive you a bit especially since I don’t have a history of patterns, techniques, and tunnel vision on what parts of the lake are best at certain times. I’m starting to figure it out though and one thing I’ve found is during the summer these bass will deceive you and mix with other fish species in large schools giving the impression that what you’re seeing on your Lowrance isn’t bass….but it actually is, just not totally bass.

Last year around this time we went flipping and punching on Lake Rousseau with Glenn Browne to shoot an OG challenge fishing video. Of course the master of flipping beat me and Chris from 44 Tackle! So on my way back home I stopped at the bait shop and headed out to Lake Rousseau to pay homage to the master of punching who is sadly no longer with us with a good buddy and mentor of mine Sean Blucher. Sean is a big fish master himself and loves to flip and punch heavy cover as much as I do for bass! Sadly what we found is the FWC had done some environmental herbicide treatments and destroyed the bass ecosystem just as it was beginning to thrive.

There are a few fishing lures that I have supreme confidence in when fishing for 10 pound plus bass on some of the trophy fishing lakes in Florida. They are big reaction style baits – a magnum crankbait, a magnum spoon, and a custom swimbait. I’ve had more success catching monster bass on these baits than almost any other reaction style fishing lures. I like fishing a spinnerbaiit but nobody knows more about it than JT Kenney so I had him talk about some cold water winter fishing techniques with a spinnerbait and chatterbait while we were on Lake Guntersville.
