Fishing for bass with spoons is awesome this time of year especially as we go in to winter fishing and the cold water periods. it seems hard baits like spoons that mimic forage such as shad can be key to triggering bass to bite. One of the most important tricks to fishing magnum spoons I have found is not allowing the fish to jump once they’re hooked. You basically reel down and drag the fish in and boat flip them no matter how giant they are. We go through some spoon fishing tips and how to find the right spoon bass on your graph.

On the search for monster bass we fished a school of giant fish with a super finesse ned rig on light line and caught some big fish but lost a huge bass. I actually had the fish in my hands when I dove down to try and grab it after it came off the hook! When I’m in Florida I love exploring the deeps for trophy bass and that’s exactly what we did. I used my HDS Live to locate some groups of fish in 20-30ft of water and was forced to use finesse techniques to get them to bite like a drop shot, neko rig, and mostly a ned rig. Fishing can be a bit overwhelming especially trying to catch fish on new lake! That’s why in this video I go back to the basics of bass fishing and simplify my fishing techniques, the cover and structure, and the locations on the lake I look for bass. Sometimes it is that simple to catch fish – they’re fish right!?!?! On Lake Guntersville key winter fishing areas are marinas, rocks and bridges. Fish pass through these locations during seasonal movements in to creeks to spawn in spring and often times use these areas to stage going back and forth. I love fishing an a rig and crankbaits as well as single swimbaits which are all perfect lures to use when approaching these types of fishing situations. If you find yourself struggling to catch bass during these winter periods simplify and get back tot he basics of fishing – think about forage, seasonal movements for winter fishing and spring fishing, some of the fishing techniques you like to use and the cover you like to fish and get out to the lake and make it happen!

MICRO SWIMBAIT Fishing for Deep Winter BASS

This is one cool swimbait technique for targeting winter bass in cold water. Using a bass head jig with a light wire hook and screw lock you tread on 3.5″ or less swimbaits. In the video we caught most of our bass in deep clear water using the Scottsboro Tackle hand poured lure in a Dirty Hitch color pattern. It’s important to use a little lighter fishing rod for this technique as well – I like a 7′ M bait caster or a 7′ M spinning rod if I’m using a jig 1/4 oz or less. If you have super cold water temperatures or just ultra pressured fishing and need a finesse tactic that covers water, this technique might be the ticket.

I picked out some of my favorite early winter bass fishing lures for fishing as the water starts to get cold and fish turn to their prespawn and winter patterns. Choice baits this time of year are hardbaits such as jigs, crankbaits, Red Eye Shad style trap lures – however swimbaits still play a big roll I have some super unique micro swimbaits to share with you. A rigs or umbrella rigs are also a big deal on lakes like Chickamauga, Guntersville, and any lake that is shad focused. HOW to FIND Bass on any LAKE FISHING Cold Water

I try to make fishing as simple and easy as possible especially when it comes to looking for and finding fish on a new lake. One of the things I like to do during the cold weather winter periods is do some pre fishing using my lake contour maps so I can plot out a plan for what parts and structures of a lake look like they’re good to fish. Structures likes humps, points, bluffs, creek channels can all be identified on a lake map and you can then use your waypoints to note areas you might want to check out and try to fish. It is not the perfect solution all the time but I’ve found for me having a list of areas I want to fish for bass all noted on my C Map keeps me from losing confidence halfway through the day if I’m not catching fish or if, as winter fishing can be, it’s kind of slow.

On our fishing road trip we’re trying all different fishing lures to catch bass on these ultra clear water lakes. One way you can do that is use super tiny baits that are supposed to catch fish like crappie and bluegill. But with the clear water and pressured fish it can be the perfect solution to getting fish to eat in finesse situations – just don’t do it this way #FAIL. We also talk fishing techniques and what color fishing tubes to use for bass fishing and other rigs that will catch fish in summer and fall. We put our Battle Born Batteries to the test as well. Our bass boat lead cranking battery died and at the end of the day we had to jump our boat using our lithium batteries (that’s after having fished for 10 hrs)!!!! Saved the day and got us back to the boat ramp to fish again!
