We were fishing for bass and then all of sudden sploosh! One GIANT freshwater snook! While out fishing for peacock bass with my best friend from Wisconsin the Rebel Pop R topwater bait strikes again during our annual fishing trip enticing a monster snook to explode on top. Using light light braided fishing line and medium action spinning tackle this fish fight was one to remember! Even though we were targeting Peacock Bass this catch made day 1 of our trip a successful one! Stay tuned for day 2 when we do something I’ve never done – use live bait in the form of shiners to sight fish bedding Peacock Bass in South Florida!

Punching, flipping, swimbaits, crankbaits, hair jigs – fishing for trophy bass mash up on Lake Okeechobee and other Central Florida big bass factories! I thought it was time to throwback to some of the greates fish catches of the year and highlight fishing for bass in a wide range of situations – from targeting shallow grass and flipping mats with heavy braided fishing line to targeting fish offshore with flourocarbon, this is a bit of the best of everything.

When fishing for bass there are those times when things go CRAZY. If you like to fish for bass the shad spawn is one of the best times to fish hands down. Largemouth bass are eating reproducing shad in droves and targeting them can mean big fish and catching a lot of fish. Here are some keys though. On Lake Okeechobee it usually only happens during low light periods – sunrise, sunset, during overcast conditions – weather and sunlight is a high key to fishing this pattern. Here I’m targeting isolated grass patches near the main lake on Lake Okeechobee with fishing lures like a swim jig, Spro Poppin Frog , and almost any kind of topwater (see the bait list below). This is one fishing tip that needs to get out there because it can lead to catching a bunch of fish adn some big bass when you’re out on the lake or wherever you fish!

There are still secrets when it comes to fishing for big bass during the hot summer months. It starts with nuanced bait and lure presentations and adjusting them for how the fish set up in cover and on structure when water temps start to push to the boiling point. In the vid I caught over 26lbs of largemouth bass in Florida using some of these less known techniques and using them in a different way than what your average fisherman would. Baits that really stood out today were big swimbaits, hair jigs, Texas-Rigged soft plastics, a Neko Rig, and a Scrounger Jerky J rig. It was an EPIC day and it all came down to analyzing where the fish were at different points in the day, how they were located on structure like shell bars, as well as how the bass transitioned to suspending over heavy cover like brushpiles and offshore fish attractors.

Weather was standard Florida summer – high humidity, temps in the 90’s, partly to mostly sunny skies, and generally very minimal wind.

Fishing for bass with hair jigs is awesome. This is not me generalizing, this is not a conventional video. This is my experience on the water using hair jigs to target offshore bass on Florida lakes.

I’ve caught a lot of fish over 7lbs using hair jigs. I only need 2 sizes, 5/8 and 3/4. I’m usually targeting largemouth bass in 13-30ft of water and those weights, even with wind and current, tend to cover all the fishing bases. Color wise, it’s simple – white. I prefer Gambler’s JTK Hair Jig which comes in a Shad color that basically incorporates white with a touch of olive green which is perfect for mimicking shad and other bait fish. If there’s one huge key to the fishing technique that I’ve found in the past 2 years it’s that a hair jig is the perfect hard bait fishing tackle for targeting suspended fish. Fish anywhere from 2 feet to 12 feet off the bottom. It takes some practice to dial in the retrieve and keep the bait in the strike zone but when things come together you’ll know you’ve figured it out!

So the trolling motor on the boat broke the other day and I’ve got the itch to go fishing….but I have no boat. Time to go back to my roots and tap into the awesome bank fishing available in South Florida. You can catch peacocks, bass, snook, all kinds of fish down here. So I decided to hit up a public park that has a pond and see what I could put together on Mother’s Day. Threw the girl, the baits, the bikes and some fishing rods in the truck and took a hike to hunt for bass.

Have you ever caught too many solid fish that you just had to go pick someone up to share it with. That’s what today was – I literally caught too many 4lbs bass on crankbaits, hair jigs and the Bull Shad that I picked my dad up at the boat ramp to come fish for bass. In the end he caught a few but I ended up with another #trophycatch 8+lbs largemouth bass on a Gamble Lures JTK Hair Jig. All tackle deets, baits, and camera stuff below. As spring hits in your region fish move to their annual spawn making some of the biggest fish of the year very targetable.  I love sight fishing – the game-like process of tracking down fish that are locked on at just the right time and juggling to find more is a total rush!

Fist off, key triggers that signal bedding bass: new moon or full moon cycle (usually best a few days before each); 3-5 day warming trend; water temp (this one is regional, in South Florida it’s usually low to mid 70’s however the further north you go the cooler that temp range will be).

Arsenal of baits can vary but I prefer plastics like the Gambler Why Not, Burner Craw, or Mega Daddy.  I also love to throw tubes at bedding bass – especially in Florida since it’s not something they see very often.  My got to bait to get a fish started however is a white stick bait – watch the vid for more sight fishing bait details:

I run a pretty standard sight fishing equipment setup.  I’ll usually have 2 7′ rods one a medium, the other medium-heavy.  High-speed Shimano Curado I and 14-20lbs Sunline Flourocarbon.  Texas rigged setups with 1/4-3/8oz Eco Pro Tungsten and an Owner Wide Gap Hook 4/0 or 5/0.

What’s the strategy?  The way I approach sight fishing – when the environment is telling me they should be on beds is I commit to it 100%.  What does that mean, that means when I’m sight fishing I’m not even regular fishing.  Trolling motor is turned on high, polarized glasses on, and looking until you see the right size female.

It’s a tough process to explain but here are a few vids that really show off the process and the time it takes:
