It doesn’t matter where you’re fishing, googans exist everywhere. A reminder, what is a real googan – someone that doesn’t want to put the work in to find fish. So I’m out ledge fishing and I understand a lot of fishing holes are community spots but this guy pulled his boat up right next to mine and we even crossed fishing lines!!?! I don’t own the lake but I don’t think I would’ve done this to someone?

On a more fun subject we had a blast summer fishing using our electronics and noticing some bait fish to locate and dial in the bass. One thing I recommend is trying to fish during low light periods such as morning or sunset – it truly changes the way the fish behave and you will catch more fish.

Fishing for bass is never the same even if you go to the same lake. I’ve found on this new adventure that these fish can deceive you a bit especially since I don’t have a history of patterns, techniques, and tunnel vision on what parts of the lake are best at certain times. I’m starting to figure it out though and one thing I’ve found is during the summer these bass will deceive you and mix with other fish species in large schools giving the impression that what you’re seeing on your Lowrance isn’t bass….but it actually is, just not totally bass.

I like fishing a spinnerbaiit but nobody knows more about it than JT Kenney so I had him talk about some cold water winter fishing techniques with a spinnerbait and chatterbait while we were on Lake Guntersville. Whether you call them crawfish or crayfish bass love to to eat. Some of the best baits and fishing lures mimic these creatures and their darting action across rocks and sandy bottoms. On our road trip we fished Green Lake which is a renowned smallmouth fishery that also has some great laregmouth bass as well. One of the central baits that fish eat in this ultra clear lake is crawfish so along with trying to figure out a fishing pattern that works we play around with various fishing lures that imitate crawfish, what fishing rods, line etc to fish them on as well.

There is no doubt in my mind the Shimano Curado 200e is and was the best fishing reel ever made. These days I pair it with my heavy cover fishing rods for frog fishing, punching, flipping and anything that involves braided fishing line. These are basically antique fishing reels but they’ve held up to catching fish so awesomely well that I just can’t see myself replacing them. They do need a little TLC from time to time when I’m not on the water and I think a mouse got to my reel handle on my punching rod setup so I needed to replace it. I opted for a Hawg Tech handle over a standard Shimano replacement because my buddy makes them, they look pretty epic (matching my fishing rod), and they last longer than the one’s Shimano sells after market. We do a quick reel handle repair in this video and you can see how simple it is to swap out any standard reel handle with a new one as well as take a look at a giant fish catch using my technique specific cranking handle.

Our fishing road trip to Wisconsin has begun and it’s time to reveal one of the soft plastic worm rigs that no one talks about but used to catch me a ton of big bass. It’s a super simple diy rig or you can buy one pre rigged but in essence it’s a pre rigged straight tail plastic worm on a straight shank hook with a swivel. It’s best to use a 12-14lbs flourocarbon leader depending on how clear the water is as well as use braided fishing line behind it. When it comes to fishing rods throwing a medium action spinning rod about 7 foot seems to work best and really there’s no wrong way to work the fishing lure! Literally anyone can catch fish on this worm rig. One of the benefits as well is that it’s very easy to skip under docks or around cover and if you’re fishing really heavy vegetation you can always use a hook with a wire weed guard. A challenging but epic first day to the trip back to the old stomping grounds and the lakes and fisheries I grew up casting on. We’ll see if I learned anything while I was gone!!!

The late summer and fall flipping punching bite is here and I need a new punching rod for fishing heavy cover for bass.
