Last year around this time we went flipping and punching on Lake Rousseau with Glenn Browne to shoot an OG challenge fishing video. Of course the master of flipping beat me and Chris from 44 Tackle! So on my way back home I stopped at the bait shop and headed out to Lake Rousseau to pay homage to the master of punching who is sadly no longer with us with a good buddy and mentor of mine Sean Blucher. Sean is a big fish master himself and loves to flip and punch heavy cover as much as I do for bass! Sadly what we found is the FWC had done some environmental herbicide treatments and destroyed the bass ecosystem just as it was beginning to thrive.

There is no doubt in my mind the Shimano Curado 200e is and was the best fishing reel ever made. These days I pair it with my heavy cover fishing rods for frog fishing, punching, flipping and anything that involves braided fishing line. These are basically antique fishing reels but they’ve held up to catching fish so awesomely well that I just can’t see myself replacing them. They do need a little TLC from time to time when I’m not on the water and I think a mouse got to my reel handle on my punching rod setup so I needed to replace it. I opted for a Hawg Tech handle over a standard Shimano replacement because my buddy makes them, they look pretty epic (matching my fishing rod), and they last longer than the one’s Shimano sells after market. We do a quick reel handle repair in this video and you can see how simple it is to swap out any standard reel handle with a new one as well as take a look at a giant fish catch using my technique specific cranking handle.

The late summer and fall flipping punching bite is here and I need a new punching rod for fishing heavy cover for bass. So I asked my buddy Walt who is an expert fishing rod builder at Halo what he would recommend and what my bud JT Kenney uses for catching big fish in heavy cover. If there is one fishing technique I love it’s flipping and punching heavy cover for bass. And right now on Lake Guntersville the mats are stacked with bass to target with heavy Hawg Tech tungsten weights, a heavy action fishing rod, and big braid. You can do it too by targeting matted vegetation on your home lake or body of water, all you need to do is find vegetation that makes a canopy for bass to live under. I decided to go on an adventure to punch for bass on a new lake I’ve never fished before! We went bass fishing on Garcia Lake right near the famous Stick Marsh. The focus for the day was punching heavy vegetation and matted cover to target fishing moving in to spawn. The water is very low in Florida in 2019 and I even managed to hit a small stump so be careful if you’re running around the lake fishing in Florida right now. It was a fun day and the key really was isolated vegetation, punching through, and pumping the bait until the bass committed to biting. We missed a lot of bites but fishing a new lake is always a cool experience and it leaves you wanting to come back for more!!!

I love to catch bass but am I willing to get my truck stuck in the middle of an orange grove to punch for fish???? YES!!! This is the sketchiest fishing adventure I’ve ever taken to a lake I’ve never seen but it had mats and big Florida bass in mats are irresistible! I try to shoot fun vids and when my friend said he knew about a lake that had a dirt boat ramp where you could get your truck stuck but their were mats everywhere I couldn’t turn it down. We went out and punched for spring bass and it was a grind – some of the toughest but most fun fishing I’ve done yet this year down in Florida! Of course I lost a giant and so did my friend but the best part was going on the adventure and finding a new fishing hole!!!

This is one technique I love for tournament fishing on Lake Okeechobee. We just fished bass fishing tournament and we had a one in a million clutch finish! By the end of the day we won a 2nd place finish against some of the best anglers on the lake. The Roland Martin Marine Series is the biggest fishing tournament on the lake and a first place finish in that derby is huge. The last few events we’ve struggled and our tournament finishes have not been what we were hoping for – but that’s why I love this lake. It’s so dynamic the bass fishing can absolutely go off in a matter of minutes!
