It’s winter, the water is cold, but the lake is fishing INSANE!!! We caught 2 massive bass using 2 lures I love to fish when it comes to winter and they provide a perfect cold weather pattern to cover fish that get tight to cover as well as those that suspend. Both baits trigger fish into biting which is key when the water gets extremely clear and cold. Crankbaits and swimbaits along with a jerkbait are my go to’s when water temps drop into the 50’s. The spinnerbait comes in handy too as a more compact rig that I can throw around cover. We targeted creeks and pockets with hard bottom such as rocks as well as pockets with downed trees on the bank that stuck out into the water and provided a place for fish to suspend near as well as holding shad and other baitfish.

On our fishing road trip we’re trying all different fishing lures to catch bass on these ultra clear water lakes. One way you can do that is use super tiny baits that are supposed to catch fish like crappie and bluegill. But with the clear water and pressured fish it can be the perfect solution to getting fish to eat in finesse situations – just don’t do it this way #FAIL. We also talk fishing techniques and what color fishing tubes to use for bass fishing and other rigs that will catch fish in summer and fall. We put our Battle Born Batteries to the test as well. Our bass boat lead cranking battery died and at the end of the day we had to jump our boat using our lithium batteries (that’s after having fished for 10 hrs)!!!! Saved the day and got us back to the boat ramp to fish again!

Our fishing road trip to Wisconsin has begun and it’s time to reveal one of the soft plastic worm rigs that no one talks about but used to catch me a ton of big bass. It’s a super simple diy rig or you can buy one pre rigged but in essence it’s a pre rigged straight tail plastic worm on a straight shank hook with a swivel. It’s best to use a 12-14lbs flourocarbon leader depending on how clear the water is as well as use braided fishing line behind it. When it comes to fishing rods throwing a medium action spinning rod about 7 foot seems to work best and really there’s no wrong way to work the fishing lure! Literally anyone can catch fish on this worm rig. One of the benefits as well is that it’s very easy to skip under docks or around cover and if you’re fishing really heavy vegetation you can always use a hook with a wire weed guard. A challenging but epic first day to the trip back to the old stomping grounds and the lakes and fisheries I grew up casting on. We’ll see if I learned anything while I was gone!!!

The fishing road trip is wrapped up and now it’s time to break down the patterns, baits, as well as the rod and reel arsenal we used to catch smallmouth bass up in Michigan! The pattern highlights really focused on 2 different baits, a jerkbait and a Ned Rig. I caught my PB smallie on the jerkbait right off the bait but when fishing Lake Huron got super close to beating it fishing the Ned Rig. These are a different class of smallmouth bass and triggering bigger bites was key in making this an epic trip. The break down and recap on techniques and everything we did and figured out when it came to fishing these giant spring smallmouth bass is layed out in the video. Been catching a lot of fish cranking of late… catching as well as losing a lot of bass on them.

The vid above really emphasizes the focus you have to put on equipment and terminal tackle when  you’re trying to closing the deal on crank bait fish.  It’s been a learning experience and in the end there’s no 100% land-rate way around crankbait fishing especially deep cranking;  but factors like changing out your hooks to Mustad KVD Short Shanks and going with a high quality, low stretch, low diameter flourocarbon like Sunline FC Sniper as well.  On 6XD style baits I’ll go with straight 10lbs test however when going up to 10XD sized baits I’ll use 12-14lbs.

Another big key when deep cranking has been equipment.  When throwing cranks like the Strike King 6XD, 10XD, and other so called “mag-diving” cranks the right rod is essential.  Your standard 7′ composite stick just doesn’t cut it anymore on baits that can run, casted, to almost 27′.This kind of cranking takes a longer beefier rod.  On 6XD’s and 8XD’s or baits that run down to 21-22ft up to 1.25oz I run a Powell Max 3D 804 CB.  When going up to the gigantic stuff like a 10XD or greater I’ll turn to a Powell Max 3D 7115 CB.  Both rods offer a bit more beef but still a moderate classic cranking style action to allow the fish to do the work when hooking up.

Reels are pretty simple.  I like my Shimano Stuff such as the Casitas,  Curado I, or Chronarch reels.  Speeds are key; on 6XD style baits a standard  6:2:1 is what I opt for so I can get the bait down quick and retrieve the bait fairly quickly.  On the 10XD however I do go for a slower reel – something like a 5:2:1.  The added power helps crank that beast down and also keeps it down.
