There are a few summer fishing lures that never fail to catch bass. Baits and techniques that I have a ton of confidence in to trigger fish to bite in the summer heat. Most of theses lures rely on getting bass to react to the lure such as crankbaits and swimbaits – their action never fail to catch bass this time of year that are active and pursuing forage like bluegills and shad. There’s also a couple lesser known baits such as the scrounger trailer combination that has become a staple technique for ledge fishing and structure fishing. And although I love fishing moving lures this time of year to catch bass you always need to have some finesse techniques for those fish that are failing to respond to your reaction lures. It seems fish never fail to bite a ned rig or a drop shot with a small stick style bait especially a wacky rigged drop shot!

There is only one lure you need to catch bass in spring and honestly the way it triggers fish it’s like cheating!!! The Ned Rig is one of the best fishing lures for a couple reasons – it catches small fish and giant bass but also any angler can fish it from a beginner to an expert angler. It’s a finesse style technique that catches all species of bass and especially in late spring fishing a Ned Rig is just like cheating because the fish can’t resist it! I rig my ned rig jig with a small soft plastic worm stickbait that I cut down – a Gambler Ace and it’s tough to beat a color like green pumpkin. Since the water was not super clear and we were fishing for smallmouth and largemouth bass I used some chartreuse dip on the tail as well.

There are a few fishing lures that I have supreme confidence in when fishing for 10 pound plus bass on some of the trophy fishing lakes in Florida. They are big reaction style baits – a magnum crankbait, a magnum spoon, and a custom swimbait. I’ve had more success catching monster bass on these baits than almost any other reaction style fishing lures. Fishing can be a bit overwhelming especially trying to catch fish on new lake! That’s why in this video I go back to the basics of bass fishing and simplify my fishing techniques, the cover and structure, and the locations on the lake I look for bass. Sometimes it is that simple to catch fish – they’re fish right!?!?! On Lake Guntersville key winter fishing areas are marinas, rocks and bridges. Fish pass through these locations during seasonal movements in to creeks to spawn in spring and often times use these areas to stage going back and forth. I love fishing an a rig and crankbaits as well as single swimbaits which are all perfect lures to use when approaching these types of fishing situations. If you find yourself struggling to catch bass during these winter periods simplify and get back tot he basics of fishing – think about forage, seasonal movements for winter fishing and spring fishing, some of the fishing techniques you like to use and the cover you like to fish and get out to the lake and make it happen!

This is one cool swimbait technique for targeting winter bass in cold water. Using a bass head jig with a light wire hook and screw lock you tread on 3.5″ or less swimbaits. In the video we caught most of our bass in deep clear water using the Scottsboro Tackle hand poured lure in a Dirty Hitch color pattern. It’s important to use a little lighter fishing rod for this technique as well – I like a 7′ M bait caster or a 7′ M spinning rod if I’m using a jig 1/4 oz or less. If you have super cold water temperatures or just ultra pressured fishing and need a finesse tactic that covers water, this technique might be the ticket.

The rain took a break and we went finesse micro swimbait fishing on Lake Lanier with Tim from Hammond’s Fishing Center! Tim taught me about “blow thrus” and other lingo anglers use to describe various cover and structure on the lake. The water is rather clear and the main forage is blueback herring. Tim explained that the herring will eat the eggs of the bass and using that micro swimbait like a Little EZ on a ball head and slow rolling it on the bottom mimics the bluebacks. This finesse rig is pretty cool and I think it would be perfect for targeting bass on Smith Lake as well as rocky areas during summer and winter.

At this rate I’ll never be a pro LOL!!!! We hit a new lake for a 1v1 head to head fishing challenge with my friend Charlie to see who could catch the biggest bass on a clear water lake we have NEVER been to! We used our Lowrance sonar and C Map to find structure and locate fish and then experimented with a variety of fishing lures. There is no doubt the highlight was a swimbait. Both Charlie and I ended up turning to a hollow body swimbait – styles and sizes below – rigged up with 3/4oz swimbait jig head with stout hook. The 1v1 competition added some fun and some hilarious smack talk to the whole fishing trip. Watch the whole vid to see who wins this challenge and what lures worked on this ultra clear lake!

Is it worth it to buy the most expensive jerk bait fishing lure? The answer is yes. The Megabass Vision jerk baits are INSANE! On this clear water fishing trip to the lake I used them to target bass that were schooling on shad and suspending in ultra clear water and caught my biggest fish on the Vision 110! I throw it on a 7′ fishing rod with a moderate action made for crank bait fishing and use 12lbs flourocarbon fishing line. The lures are no doubt crazy expensive but imo totally worth it in the way they draw bites from fish that just don’t seem to be interested in any other fishing lure or jerk bait.

Funniest part of the day is I had to go on a polar swimming adventure because my bass boat drifted away from the boat ramp – water temp was a freezing winter 52!!!!! Always make sure you tie up your boat – don’t just rely on Power Poles!!!
