I like tournament fishing but when you see a bass fishing tournament devastate and destroy a lake like this it’s a trigger. Taking care of fish is very important in our sport because it means we can continue to enjoy the lakes and places we love to spend time so when you see fish wasting away at a boat ramp like this I’m disgusted. On a happier note I caught over 30lbs of bass – including 3 7 pounders on consective casts with a giant crankbait! Don’t miss the double up giant that comes off right next to the boat – probably would’ve been my PB but who knows. Key to catching fish was finding isolated structure using my C Map and scanning it with my HDS Live to look for just a couple bass and then fishing for micro schools of 2-4 fish. It was all a reaction bite – tossing a giant crankbait like the Strike King 10xd on 12lbs flourocarbon and grinding on the bottom!

Our fishing road trip to Wisconsin has begun and it’s time to reveal one of the soft plastic worm rigs that no one talks about but used to catch me a ton of big bass. It’s a super simple diy rig or you can buy one pre rigged but in essence it’s a pre rigged straight tail plastic worm on a straight shank hook with a swivel. It’s best to use a 12-14lbs flourocarbon leader depending on how clear the water is as well as use braided fishing line behind it. When it comes to fishing rods throwing a medium action spinning rod about 7 foot seems to work best and really there’s no wrong way to work the fishing lure! Literally anyone can catch fish on this worm rig. One of the benefits as well is that it’s very easy to skip under docks or around cover and if you’re fishing really heavy vegetation you can always use a hook with a wire weed guard. A challenging but epic first day to the trip back to the old stomping grounds and the lakes and fisheries I grew up casting on. We’ll see if I learned anything while I was gone!!!

I’ve NEVER been to this clear water lake ever!!! Google Maps found it! So the challenge is to find fish now break down every part of the lake and go through the process I use when I’m fishing a new body of water for the very first time!!! For me it all starts with technology like using Google Maps or Google Earth to find lakes near me and analyze how clear the water is, what the layout of the lake is, does it have a boat ramp? Then we use technology like our C Map and Lowrance sonar to scan and understand the bottom if it’s slime or sand and look for bass. We explore the whole process of finding a lake as well as figuring out and and catching bass in a variety of scenarios!!

There are so many options when fishing a Ned Rig but I never thought I would put anything but a finesse style plastic worm on it. Today the lake offered extremely windy conditions which caused what is normally clear water to become slightly dirty and stir up. We used the wind to find bass set up on a ledge facing in to current and then adapted our Ned Rig to fish finesse but also displace water with a tailed fishing lure to attract fish with all the turbulance the wind was creating. We ended up doing a mod with a Gambler Burner Worm and then a Burner Craw. The key being the kicking tails on the baits and creating more action to call the fish in versus using a more traditional stick bait or Z Man TRD.
