We were fishing for bass and then all of sudden sploosh! One GIANT freshwater snook! While out fishing for peacock bass with my best friend from Wisconsin the Rebel Pop R topwater bait strikes again during our annual fishing trip enticing a monster snook to explode on top. Using light light braided fishing line and medium action spinning tackle this fish fight was one to remember! Even though we were targeting Peacock Bass this catch made day 1 of our trip a successful one! Stay tuned for day 2 when we do something I’ve never done – use live bait in the form of shiners to sight fish bedding Peacock Bass in South Florida!

Punching, flipping, swimbaits, crankbaits, hair jigs – fishing for trophy bass mash up on Lake Okeechobee and other Central Florida big bass factories! I thought it was time to throwback to some of the greates fish catches of the year and highlight fishing for bass in a wide range of situations – from targeting shallow grass and flipping mats with heavy braided fishing line to targeting fish offshore with flourocarbon, this is a bit of the best of everything.

When fishing for bass there are those times when things go CRAZY. If you like to fish for bass the shad spawn is one of the best times to fish hands down. Largemouth bass are eating reproducing shad in droves and targeting them can mean big fish and catching a lot of fish. Here are some keys though. On Lake Okeechobee it usually only happens during low light periods – sunrise, sunset, during overcast conditions – weather and sunlight is a high key to fishing this pattern. Here I’m targeting isolated grass patches near the main lake on Lake Okeechobee with fishing lures like a swim jig, Spro Poppin Frog , and almost any kind of topwater (see the bait list below). This is one fishing tip that needs to get out there because it can lead to catching a bunch of fish adn some big bass when you’re out on the lake or wherever you fish!

There are still secrets when it comes to fishing for big bass during the hot summer months. It starts with nuanced bait and lure presentations and adjusting them for how the fish set up in cover and on structure when water temps start to push to the boiling point. In the vid I caught over 26lbs of largemouth bass in Florida using some of these less known techniques and using them in a different way than what your average fisherman would. Baits that really stood out today were big swimbaits, hair jigs, Texas-Rigged soft plastics, a Neko Rig, and a Scrounger Jerky J rig. It was an EPIC day and it all came down to analyzing where the fish were at different points in the day, how they were located on structure like shell bars, as well as how the bass transitioned to suspending over heavy cover like brushpiles and offshore fish attractors.

Weather was standard Florida summer – high humidity, temps in the 90’s, partly to mostly sunny skies, and generally very minimal wind.

Spent time fishing with Lake Okeechobee Hammer Matt Wieteha teaching him a bit about what I’ve learned on fishing for bass off the bank. A hot, flat summer day in Central Florida where the bite was tough but panned out into a 20+lbs limit of bass and a pretty stellar day hanging out with good people.

Techniques used were crankbaits, Neko Rigs, Texas Rigged plastics, and drop shot. Big fish tended to come on the wacky rig setup and bigger crankbaits.

This is the best way to get great audio from your action camera and the best shot when fishing in POV or first person perspective situations like fishing. This rig is comfortable, adaptable, portable and light weight allowing you to shoot for extended periods of time without changing batteries.

I film video for when fishing for bass every time I’m on the water and it took some time to figure out a camera rig that offered the shot and audio I was looking for. This is what I came up with, hope its something that can work for you when fishing from the bank, from the boat, or even when shooting general videos highlighting your fishing exploits.

Setup is super easy and links to everything in the video are down below. Not going to lie, was holding this video back for awhile as I think it’ll really change the way people shoot video when out fishing but as usual I’m always down with sharing what I learn to help other anglers get better video catching bass!!!

Capture it all. This is not a cooking video. Fidget for the best video. Breaking content. Punching for fish the best way with tungsten and all you need to fish.

Fishing for bass with hair jigs is awesome. This is not me generalizing, this is not a conventional video. This is my experience on the water using hair jigs to target offshore bass on Florida lakes.

I’ve caught a lot of fish over 7lbs using hair jigs. I only need 2 sizes, 5/8 and 3/4. I’m usually targeting largemouth bass in 13-30ft of water and those weights, even with wind and current, tend to cover all the fishing bases. Color wise, it’s simple – white. I prefer Gambler’s JTK Hair Jig which comes in a Shad color that basically incorporates white with a touch of olive green which is perfect for mimicking shad and other bait fish. If there’s one huge key to the fishing technique that I’ve found in the past 2 years it’s that a hair jig is the perfect hard bait fishing tackle for targeting suspended fish. Fish anywhere from 2 feet to 12 feet off the bottom. It takes some practice to dial in the retrieve and keep the bait in the strike zone but when things come together you’ll know you’ve figured it out!

The first Gambler Gear Up fishing package is out and I got my hands on one early! It includes 14 bags of Gambler fishing baits all selected by pro angler JT Kenney as well as a 5 Liter Gambler Tek Dry Bag and a Gambler Buff.

Want yours? Get it here: http://www.gambler-lures.com/product_p/gub1.htm

I go through and look at the colors and bait styles incorporated in the package. I also look at some of the fishing techniques and applications I use these types of baits for. I like JT Kenney and really agree with his fishing bait picks especially if you’re looking to simplify what kinds of plastics you have with you for fishing a range of lakes and bodies of water. These are the right colors and the right styles to do anything from fish shallow grass to targeting offshore bass.

I get a lot of viewers asking why I have a Lowrance Hook 7 on my front deck when I already have an HDS 9 Touch – there are some very specific reasons related to fishing for bass offshore that I’ve installed that fish finder on the bow. It is very much related to using the down scan to target fish more specifically and efficiently
Let me know if you have any questions and what your experience with these units is.
