Bass Fishing such an emotional sport that you hate to love it sometimes. Lake Okeechobee fishing for bass can have you on the lowest low and keep you there – it’s why I love it but struggle not to hate it when you hit a dry spell. This is the first vid of a collabo with youtuber Bass Quest and his family who came down from Lake Chickamauga to do some Lake Okeechobee Florida fishing and enjoy some beach time in South Florida! We managed to tap into some shad spawn fish and had a flat out good time horsing around and causing some shenanigans! Stay tuned though – community and Karma come thru on the last day for an ultimate punching for bass session on Lake Okeechobee that was INSANE!

Frog fishing for bass is almost as fun as punching. We broke down 3 types of frog fishing anyone trying to fish catch fish must know about. We also threw in our top frog lure picks as well as what kind of fishing line and what type of fishing rod to throw them on to catch more bass wherever your lake is at! Bass Quest also let the secret out on frog lure colors and what you REALLY need to look at when picking a frog to fish with. There’s been such a hot frog bite on Lake Okeechobee lately – and in general summer is a great time to be using frogs to catch bass – I thought it was time to get in depth on this fishing technique and cast some fishing tips your way to catch more and bigger bass the next time you head to the water!

Who doesn’t LIKE to fish for bass with topwater LURES? During the shad spawn there’s a few fishing lures that you need to have to catch bass. The crazy part is some of them are not even topwater baits but when you fish they focus on the surface of the water column! The shad spawn is when forage like shad spawn on grass or hard cover -just like bass in a way. It leads to a fish feeding frenzy during low light periods of the day. Thus you don’t get all day to target them and usually it’s just a small window in the morning when you get to the lake. On Lake Okeechobee the weird part is this spawn lasts all summer where as on most bodies of water it only occurs when the water is under 80 degrees.

I CAUGHT a NEW PB bass on Lake Okeechobee fishing with Lojo Fishing and Fishing with Norm! Tricked her with a Mag Ned Rig fishing for bass in a community area before a bass tournament. Totally INSANE the fish weighed in just over 10lbs+ and put on an EPIC fight dragging the boat and even forcing us to chase her with the trolling motor. Tricking a fish like that is not easy task too with all the pressure and pre tournament fishing going on so it was a cool experience to share with fellow YouTubers!

If I had to pick one I would say the most hated rig in the bass fishing community overall is the Carolina Rig. I’ve run into more guys who recognize it’s value, the Carolina Rig’s ability to catch fish in a wide range of situations, but still flat out hate the setup with a vengeance. I too am one of those who is not a fan of the rig but knows it’s something you need to know how to use and throw if you want to be decent at bass fishing.

Threw some summer fishing tips down for you right here along with some horrible singing! LOL! it’s not always about huge bass, sometimes it’s about getting out and getting bit and especially during summer that hated rig can play in to your hand if you can find some mixing water or current to locate fish on structure, which is exactly what we did here.

I’m afraid if this continues it could kill Lake Okeechobee – one of the best freshwater fishereis in the country. Who is doing it? The REAL STORY is not in the news but you’ll hear about the toxic algae blooms on the coast. Killing grass on the lake has increased annually since 2010 and it’s not just invasive species being targeted anymore. Lake Okeechobee water levels have marched up – a story that should have made news in 2013 but was passed over until the crisis we find ourselves in now. I don’t have the answers and you need to remember no matter what “real story” you listen too there is an agenda and bias behind it. This is how I’ve watched the killing of Lake Okeechobee unravel since 2010 when I first arrived in South Florida. There isn’t one person to blame for the destruction of the lake but Okeechobee has been victim to a wide range of interests and politics which all in in all jeopardize the future of Florida’s greatest freshwater fishery!

We’ve all been there strutting the angler walk of shame at the end of a hard fished tournament. It’s tough to swallow after having put in so much time and really committed to laying it all on the line – but that’s the reality of tournament fishing, especially on Lake Okeechobee. There’s no shame in losing – even badly if you’re able to reset as an angler and come back and fish again. And sometimes that’s all you can do – fish, fail, and get right back out there. The walk of shame is just a reminder of how humbling this sport can be and how mother nature is never predictable when it comes to fishing for bass.

Once again the topwater frog was a top fishing lure out here on Lake Okeechobee as well as punching with a jig and Mega Daddy combo or a 1/2oz. Hawgtech tungsten paired up with a bulk plastic bait.

The frog fishing bite has been on fire as well as punching but this tournament practice on Lake Okeechobee was a flat out nightmare. Nothing seemed to come together and when we did get a good fish to bite on the topwater frog or punching the grass it seemed like it was totally random. This is the game though, you put your time in, see what’s happening on the lake and hope that something will come together tournament day. No doubt though, with the amount of fishing time both me and Donny put in we were hoping to not be in such a nightmare scenario. With that said some of my favorite ways to catch bass on Lake Okeechobee are frogging and punching so who knows, maybe we can patch something together the day of the tournament out here!

It feels like cheating to catch bass on Lake Okeechobee with a topwater frog like this! I’m practicing for a big fishing tournament on the lake and this is the first of a few vids capturing the experience running up to tournament day. Pre fishing, looking for bass, testing lures, it’s all here and today was an insane start! The frog fishing was on fire! I even caught a HUGE bass on my modified mag ned rig casting to sticks and isolated cover in a super shallow bay on the lake. These are all just pieces of the puzzle for anglers and the process is about building confidence and executing on tournament day – catching the right bass to take away the win! Aside from all that tournament fishing provides a great sense of community and you get to meet the diversity of anglers on the water, learning throughout the entire process.
